HOW IT WORKS
How DuoLocker works
The DuoLocker is an electronic device installable on any existing apparatus. It is designed to read RFID (NFC) Tags pre-programmed by Duolabs with a predefined number of units or credits, which are loaded directly into the device.
The end user simply needs to bring the Recharge Tag, included in the original packaging of the consumable product, close to the DuoLocker installed in the main device. DuoLocker automatically handles the following:
- READS THE RECHARGE TAG.
- LOADS THE CREDIT into its internal counter.
- DISABLES THE TAG immediately after reading to prevent reuse on another device.
Once installed, DuoLocker communicates with the main device it is integrated into. Before any operation begins, the main device requests authorization from DuoLocker to deduct the credits required for the service (whatever it may be).
DuoLocker evaluates the request based on its internal counter, functioning similarly to an ATM verifying balance availability before authorizing a withdrawal.
- If the required credits are available, the operation is authorized.
- The credits are then automatically deducted from the DuoLocker's internal counter, updating the remaining availability in real-time.

Special Tags
The DuoLocker is designed to be installed in devices that do not necessarily have a display. A typical example is coffee capsule or pod machines, which often lack a visual interface.
Using Special Tags, such as Service Tags, you can check or modify the DuoLocker's status without opening the main device. This feature enables quick and intuitive interventions, even in the field.
Imagine a coffee machine: you can easily check the number of remaining doses using the EXPORT Special Tag. Similarly, you can load new credits with the IMPORT Special Tag. All of this happens in seconds, without needing to access the main device or use a PC. This solution ensures simplicity and practicality, even in complex operational environments.
The EXPORT Special Tag can be read by any Android smartphone equipped with NFC, a feature now integrated into all next-generation smartphones. This operation requires no specific application, although a custom app can be developed if required.

How DuoLocker communicates
The DuoLocker communicates with your main device using a serial protocol (UART, RS232, or RS485). Only four wires are required to connect it to the main device.
To use the DuoLocker, your main device only needs a serial port. The communication protocol is provided in source code, making it easily implementable even on 8-bit microcontrollers, ensuring a simple and quick integration process.
Duolabs provides all the necessary support to ensure successful integration into your devices. In addition to the communication protocol, we offer a PC simulator in source code (C/C++) to guide you step-by-step through the integration process.
Typically, the integration process using the Development Kit provided requires only a few days to complete. Integrations of this product have always been successful within a maximum of three days, even with developers outside the client company.
Security
The DuoLocker owes its success to the security of the system, both in terms of hardware and software.
The content of the Tags is signed with a private key using standard public encryption algorithms.
The credit is stored inside each DuoLocker using hardware-specific devices for this type of application.
Modern software techniques are implemented to counter cloning and physical attacks on the device, ensuring a long-term solution without the risk of Tag cloning.
Storing the credit inside the DuoLocker instead of the main device ensures that the credit always remains in a single secure location. For example, if the main device needs to be replaced, the DuoLocker will retain the customer's remaining credit.
This feature allows for the replacement of the main device, should it be defective, without the need to recharge or program it with specific credit. DuoLocker protects you from potential disputes regarding credit retention!

Tags and their programming
The DuoLocker uses low-cost Tags for credit recharging, making them ideal for inexpensive consumables where the cost per unit must remain minimal. The NFC Tags used are widely available in the market and are supplied directly by Duolabs.
The Tags can be customized with monochromatic or color prints to make product identification easier in the market. All Tags provided are of excellent quality, sourced directly from global manufacturers, and are delivered only after a thorough verification of the correct programming of each Tag.
The meticulous attention to every stage of production ensures there are no post-sale disputes from distributors or end customers. Once used, the recharge Tags are written with the unique serial number of the DuoLocker they were loaded into. This allows any post-sale disputes to be resolved by verifying the Tag's content, guaranteeing complete traceability of the product from programming to final use in the DuoLocker.
Tag programming in series is carried out by Duolabs using professional machines that verify and serialize each Tag individually.
Thanks to the technology developed by Duolabs, daily Tag production capacity reaches tens of thousands of units. This ensures the ability to handle emergencies or sudden sales increases for your consumables.
To guarantee full traceability throughout the production chain, the unique serial number of each RFID Tag is saved and communicated to the customer.
The Development Kit includes customized RFID readers and dedicated software to enable customers to generate Special Tags independently.
Customization of Recharge Tags
